Three states in which water can exist are namely,
Solid, eg. ice.
Liquid eg. water
Gas eg.steam
Factors which determine the change of state are :
1. Temperature : Low temperature yields to the formation of solids while high temperature yields to the formation of gases. This is because with increase in temperature, kinetic energy of molecules increases which in turn leads to decrease in intermolecular forces.
2. Pressure : Conversion of gases to liquid and to solid takes place with increase in pressure. This is so because with increase in pressure, molecules comes closer to each other which result in increase of intermolecular forces.
Temperature at which fusion of ice takes place,i.e. melting point of ice = 0ºC
Temperature at which vaporisation of water takes place,i.e. boiling point = 100ºC
