●For water pollinated plants, The pollen grains should be produced in large quantities.
●The female flower reaches the surface of the water.
●Vallisneria produce a coiled peduncle (female), which straightens out so the stigma can reach above the water surface. The spathe (male) also straightens out so its petals break loose and float on the surface. Its three leaves and anthers form a sailboat. The spathe floats along until hopefully it bumps into a stigma.

Features of Water Pollinated Flowers:

 Water pollinated plants are Vallisneria, Hydrilla and Zostera (Marine grass).

 Some aquatic plants like water hyacinth and water lily are insect pollinated.

 Wind and water pollinated plants are not very colorful and do not produce nectar.

 In Vallisneria, female flower reach the surface of water by long stalk and male flower release pollen grains on to the surface of water. Pollens are carried to female flowers passively by water currents.

 In some aquatic plants, female flowers remain submerged in water.

 Long ribbon like pollen grains are carried passively to the stigma. Example: Sea grass.

 In most of the water pollinated species, pollen grains are protected from wetting by a mucilaginous covering.
