IMPORTANCE OF MOUNTAINS TO MAN  

• Mountains are used for tourist attraction. Example are holiday resorts like Olumo rock, Idanre Hills etc

• Mountains serve as a source of river. Example is River Niger from the Guinea Highlands

• Minerals are mined from mountain highland. Examples include tin and columbite from Jos

• Rocks from highlands are used for constructions Examples include rock from Shai Hill used to construct the Tema Harbour in Ghana

• Mountains encourage relief rain formation

ADVANTAGES OF MOUNTAINS

1. Mountains provide tourist attractions,
2. Mountains collect water and store it to provide water to otherwise arid places,
3. Mountains counterbalance the other mountains to stabilise the Earth’s orbit,
4. Mountains provide dividing lands for the countries,
5. Mountains help to regulate the climate. The water boils at lower temperatures due to less pressure at the high altitudes.

Plateaus are important because of the following reasons:

• Plateaus are storehouses of minerals.

• They have rich deposits of minerals. (While the African Plateau has huge reserves of gold and silver, Chota Nagpur Plateau in India is famous for coal, iron and manganese deposits).

• Plateaus are also the source of several waterfalls. (In India, two important waterfalls in the plateau regions are Hundru falls in the Chota Nagpur plateau on the river Subarnarekha and the Jog falls in Karnataka).

• The lava plateaus that are formed due to volcanic eruptions have black soil, which is suitable for cultivation.  

• Plateaus have many scenic spots which greatly attract tourists.

ADVANTAGES OF PLATEAUS:

1. It can be a good place to live, and easier to build on because the land is relatively flat already.
2. It's defensible.
3. You can also see your enemies coming from the high vantage point, without the trickiness of not being able to see around the top of a mountain or the higher danger of falling.
4. You could probably also plant crops if there were enough room.
