Sati was an ancient practice in India in which a widow sat on the pyre of her husband and burned herself to death.
According to Hindus, a widow has nothing left in life, and it's better for her to immolate herself rather than facing the world alone.
Burning herself along with her husband was considered as her devotion to him. T
he Britishers were against this Sati system, and made laws to abolish it completely from the Indian society.
