Sati was one of the most heinous crimes commited in preindependent India. In Sati tradition,if a man dies then his wife and children were also burned alive. It is beyond imagination to bear the scene. It was Raja Ram Mohan Roy who spoke against Sati traditions. He strongly stood up against Sati tradition and saved many lives

Arguments that people who supported Sati gave were as under:-

1)To avoid any kind of illtreatment that woman may face in future.

2)To avoid any kind of romantic involment after husband's death.

3)In those times women did not work or earn any living and after death of husband if there was no family support then there was no future as women would not be able to feed herself and her children.

Argumets against Sati:-

1)It was really inhuman and heinous to forcefully kill someone who wishes to live.

2)How can we stop and kill a woman who is pregnant or has children?

3)Why were women not allowed to work if their husband's died?

4)Why can't a women marry again after her first husband died?
