The Black Death spread very quickly through the tightly packed cities, killing quite a bit of the population. As a result, many houses and jobs in the cities were suddenly 'vacant'. Many farmers moved from the fields to the cities to fill these new openings. Ironically, the aftermath of the plague is a 'great' time to be a peasant.

Answer:

Farmers were clearing forests and adopting better farming methods. As a result, they had a surplus of crops to sell in town markets. And because of these surpluses, not everyone had to farm to feed themselves. Another reason for the growth of towns was the revival of trade.
