AC current is used everywhere because……all appliances like heaters, AC,Fridge work on AC…these are high voltage devices…now for smaller devices like TV,Computer, Chargers.. Need lower DC voltage.. So transformer are inside there to convert the high voltage AC to low voltage DC……..so some require high voltage and some require low..hence household supply is always AC..as they can be easily converted to various lower voltages…in India it is 220V,50Hz AC,single phase

The characteristic features of the electric current used in our homes, are as follows -

• The voltage of supplied current to our households is generally lies between the range of 220V-240V.

• The current which is supplied to our households is actually AC current. In the previous decades we used DC current instead of currently used AC current.

• There are three types of wires by which the supplied electricity flows in the necessary direction :

- Live wire.

- Neutral wire.

- Earthing wire.

• The supplied electricity is generated in the thermal power plant in majority of the cases.
