Stanley Houghton introduces the comic elements into the play very skillfully. The daughters think their father is dead. They are in mourning dress. But father appears and asks them why they are in black dress. Their efforts to tell a lie produces a lot of comedy.  As Abel tries to put on his hand on Ben, he quickly goes back to a safe distance out of fear. And in one moment Mrs. Slater pokes Abel with her hand to see if he is solid. All these incidents produce a lot of comedy.
