Clayey particles are finer than sandy grains. Try to feel the sand and you will feel grains in your hand and if you try to feel clay, it will feel like a powder.

Clay has cohesion. Try putting some water in clay, it will be a sticky blob whereas sand would only become wet.

  • The key difference between sandy and clay soils is water permeability. Sandy soils are highly permeable to water while clay soils have low to very low permeability.

  • In clayey Soil, the proportion of fine(small) particle is higher whereas in sandy soil, the proportion of large particles is higher.

  • Water can not drain quickly in case of clayey soil whereas water can drain quickly in case of sandy soil.

  • Clayey soil is heavy in weight whereas sandy soil is light in weight.
