The biggest difference is particle size. Of all types of soil, sand has the largest particle size, and clay has the smallest. ... To get soil with drainage that is somewhere in between, mixing clay with sand is not a great idea. Depending on the plant, but soil with medium particle size can hold water, but not too much.
