Answer:

Droughts can be hard for people living in hot areas as there might be a shortage of water for them to drink. In places like Africa, where days are really hot and riverscan be far away for some, people young and old will walk barefoot to the nearest well with a large bowl on their heads and scoop water into their bowl and carry it all the way home. This trip can happen everyday. But, the water isn't always clean. This can lead to severe health problems. The unclean water can cause the crops to fail so there won't be enough food to go around. Farmers who look after the crops won't get paid so the area will become poor quickly. The water isn't just for drinking, though. Water can be used for many things like cooking and bathing. Not everyone has clean water so they can get sick quickly too. If a family has a father who lost his job as a farmer because of a pay shortage and the mother doesn't work at all, there will not be much money to buy food, water and medicine for the sick ones.

How does it affect animals and their homes?

The same goes for animals as people. Animals get their water from a river but when a drought happens, the river will dry up and there won't be much for all of them to share. If an animal lives in a tree, the sun will dry out the leaves quickly and the animal could loose their home because the branches would become frail and that won't protect them from the sun. If a drought is really hot, the the branches could catch fire, causing a wildfire to break out, destroying millions of homes and claiming lives of innocent animals and people.

I got my infomation from Newsround.

To conclude, these are the effects of a drought, how it happens and what it can cause. Let me know what you think about the effects of droughts, too.
