Step-by-step explanation:

Given :-

-4 and -2

To find :-

List the four rational numbers between the -4 & -2

Solution :-

Mean Method :-

Given numbers are -4 and -2

We know that

The rational number between a and b = (a+b)/2

The first rational number between -4 and -2

We have ,a = -4 and b = -2

= (-4-2)/2

=> -6/2

=> -3

The second rational number between -4 and -3

=> (-4-3)/2

=> -7/2

The third rational number between -4 and -7/2

=> [(-4)+(-7/2)]/2

=> [(-8-7)/2]/2

=> (-15/2)/2

=> -15/(2×2)

=> -15/4

The fourth rational number between -4 and -15/4

=> [(-4)+(-15/4)]/2

=> [(-16-15)/4]/2

=> (-31/4)/2

=> -31/(4×2)

=> -31/8

The four rational numbers are -3 , -7/2,-15/4 ,-31/8

Short Method :-

Given numbers are -4 and -2

Required rational numbers = 4

On writing the denominator as 4+1 = 5 then

-4 = -4×(5/5) = (-4×5)/5 = -20/5

-2 = -2×(5/5) = (-2×5)/5 = -10/5

The rational numbers between -20/5 and -10/5

are -19/5 , -18/5, -17/5, -16/5,-15/5,-14/5, -13/5,

-12/5,-11/5

Answer:-

i)The four rational numbers between -4 and -2 are -3 , -7/2,-15/4 ,-31/8

ii) The rational numbers between -20/5 and -10/5

are -19/5 , -18/5, -17/5, -16/5,-15/5,-14/5, -13/5,

-12/5,-11/5

Used formulae:-

Mean Method:-

  • The rational number between a and b = (a+b)/2
