Blood is a fluid and a kind of connective tissue.

  • Blood is composed of RBCs (Red Blood Cells), WBCs(White Blood Cells) and platelets. Blood also consists of extracellular fluid called plasma which makes it a fluid connective tissue.
  • Since blood is a fluid connective tissue, it transports oxygen and nutrients to different parts of the body. In this process, it also removes body wastes.
  • White blood cells in the blood protect the body from infections and diseases.
  • Blood platelets contain proteins that cause clotting whenever bleeding occurs thereby preventing further or excessive bleeding.
  • Blood also maintains the chemical composition of the body. Proteins and other components of blood act as buffers and maintain an optimum pH of the body tissues. Similarly, blood also maintains the water content of body cells.
  • One of the primary functions of blood is to regulate body temperature i.e. flow of blood keeps our body warm during cold season and cools the temperature down after a heavy exercise session.
