When a ray of white light or sunlight passes through a spherical water droplets of the the rain it REFLECTS then REFRACTS due to changing medium and finally DISPERSES and split into it's constituent seven colours which appears as spectrum of seven colours called rainbow .

So, reflection, refraction and dispersion are the phenomena responsible for the formation of rainbow .
