In concave mirror,
u,f = negative always
h= positive always
v,m,h'= positive in case of virtual image and negative in case of real image.

In convex mirror,
u=negative always
f,h,h',m,v= positive always

Sign Convention of Concave and Convex mirror

Explanation:

(i) The object is always located to the mirror's left.

(ii) All the distances that are parallel to the principal axis are estimated from the mirror's pole.

(iii) All the distances that are measured in the incident ray's direction(along + X-axis) are considered as +ve and those measured against the incident ray's direction (along - X-axis) are considered as -ve.

(iv) Distance that are estimated perpendicular to and above the principal axis are considered +ve.

(v) Distance that are estimated perpendicular to and below the principal axis are considered -ve.

  • Object Distance = 'u' is always -ve
  • Focal Length of Concave mirror = -ve
  • Focal Length of Convex mirror = +ve
