Pine tree grows in hilly regions and hence can be considered as an Montane or coniferous tree because of the location and it's characteristics.

Special features includes:

  • The trees do not bear fruits. The seeds are naked in the cones.
  • It is monoecious. The male and female cones grows in the same tree.
  • The tree is cone shaped for the snow not to accumulate and slide down easily.
  • The leaves are needle like, to decrease the surface area as well as for the snow to slide down.
  • You can find a lot of resin in the barks which helps in insulation.
  • The surface of the leaves is covered with a later of cuticle, rich is cutin which prevents excess water from evaporating.

Why known as a conifer?

Conifers are the trees bearing cones and generally used for the gymnosperms. The seeds produced are naked in both the male and female cone. Since, Pine also bears such seeds, it is termed as a conifer.
