Explanation:
- The Gurjara Pratihara dynasty was founded by Harichandra in the 6th century AD. They remained influential until the 11th century.
- It is said that he originated from Ujjain or Mandsaur. Nagabhatta-I first ruled this dynasty. His empire included Gwalior, Bharuch and Malwa. The capital of his empire was Avani.
- He defeated Junaid, the Arab commander and his successor Tamin in the battle of Rajasthan. With this he successfully defended the western frontiers against the Arab invasion.
- Vatsaraja succeeded Nagabhatta I as a new king and by defeating the Pala king Dharmapala, he had established authority over Kanauj.
- Nagabhatta II succeeded Vatsaraja around 805 AD. In fact, he was the most eminent king of the Gurjara Pratihara dynasty. He is particularly known for the reconstruction of the Somnath temple in AD 815.
- The temple was destroyed by the Arab armies of Junaid in 725 AD. Mihirbhoja was the other chief king of this dynasty.
- His reign lasted till 885 AD. He was a great empire builder. He captured the territories of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan after winning a series of battles. He had attained the title of Adhivarha and built the Teli Mandir at Gwalior.
- However, in the 10th century the power of the Gurjara Pratiharas declined and their king Bhoja II was defeated by the Pala king Mahipala-I. Soon the empire disintegrated and the feudatories declared themselves independent.
