The electroscope is used to measure the amount of electric current on a body. When a electrically charged body comes in contact with the contact point of the electroscope, The electrical charge from the body passes through a gold plate, which later gets divided into 2 and both parts of the gold plate get charged with the same type of charge (positive/negative.)
Since like charges repel, both the plates from each other. The amount of displacement in the plates is directly proportional to the magnitude of the charge.
