Question:

List the uses of water.(any 10 points)

Answer:

  • Water is a compound. It is a tasteless , colourless and odourless liquid. Hydrogen and Oxygen combines to form the compound "Water".

Physical characteristics of water quality

It is essential to monitor the physical aspects of water quality to determine if the water is polluted or not. Physical characteristics can be determined by:

Color – pure water is colorless; colored water can indicate pollution. Colour can also show organic substances. The maximum acceptable level for the color of drinking water is 15 TCU (True color unit).

Turbidity – pure water is clear and does not absorb light. If turbidity appears in the water, it may indicate water pollution.

Taste and odor – pure water is always tasteless and odorless. If any type of taste and smell is present, it may indicate water pollution.

Temperature – the temperature is not directly used to evaluate whether water is drinkable or not. However, in natural water systems like lakes and rivers, the temperature is a significant physical factor that determines water quality.

Solids – If water is filtered to remove suspended solids, the remaining solid in the water indicates the total dissolved solids. If the dissolved solids in the water exceed 300 mg/l, it adversely affects living organisms as well as industrial products.

Chemical properties of water

Chemical properties of water involve assessing parameters such as pH and dissolved oxygen:

pH – pH of water is measured between 0 and 14 to determine how acidic or alkaline it is. Measurement is conducted using a logarithmic scale.

Dissolved oxygen – is the level of free, non-compound oxygen present in water or other liquids. It is an essential parameter in assessing water quality because of its influence on the organisms living within a body of water.

Water has various uses , such as :-

  • It is used for household purposes , such as drinking, bathing, cooking, flushing, gardening, washing etc.

  • It is used for agricultural purposes, it is used for growing crops and plants.

  •  Hydro-power --> electricity

  • Domestic uses; drinking, cooking, washing, shower

  • Irrigation --> agriculture; watering of plants, etc

  • Industrial uses; dilution of acids, manufacturing of soft drinks (coke, juice, etc)

  • Commercial uses; water fountains, swimming pools, etc

  • Ocean waters serve as a source of food and valuable minerals, as a vast highway for commerce, and provide a place for both recreation and waste disposal.

  • It has been estimated that as much as 10% of human protein intake comes from the oceans.

  • Nevertheless, the food-producing potential of the oceans is only partly realized.

  • Other biological products of the oceans are also commercially used.

  • For example, pearls taken from oysters are used in jewelry, and shells and coral have been widely used as a source of building material.

  • Ocean water is processed to extract commercially valuable minerals such as salt, bromine, and magnesium.

  • Although nearly 60 valuable chemical elements have been found dissolved in ocean water, most are in such dilute concentrations that commercial extraction is not profitable.

  • In a few arid regions of the world, such as Ascension Island, Kuwait, and Israel, ocean water is desalinated to produce freshwater.

Some other uses of water in our life are as under:

  1. For cleaning dishes.
  2. For cooking.
  3. For watering plants.
  4. For washing clothes.
  5. For bathing.
  6. For generation of hydroelectricity.
  7. For washing car.
  8. For drinking.
  9. For brushing teeth
  10. For agriculture
  11. For transport
  12. For Industrial purposes and many more
