A secular state is an idea pertaining to secularity, whereby a state is or purports to be officially neutral in matters of religion, supporting neither religion nor irreligion.A secular state also claims to treat all its citizens equally regardless of religion, and claims to avoid preferential treatment for a citizen based on their religious beliefs, affiliation or lack of either over those with other profiles.

Secular states do not have a state religion (e.g. an established religion) or an equivalent, although the absence of an established state religion does not necessarily imply that a state is fully secular or egalitarian in all respects. For example, that describe themselves as secular have religious references in their national anthems and flags, or laws which advantage one religion or another.

If a nation is not secular it can lead to the following disadvantages

  • It will not allow people of diverse religions/faiths to live in civility respecting all faiths.
  • It does not grants equal rights to all citizens
  • Minorities powers and right would be affected due to abuse of power by majority
  • Freedom of speech, expression is also affected.
  • Also  it would force to respect unequal religious law leading to issues such child marriage polygamy, gender disparity, extra judicial unilateral,  unequal inheritance rights, divorce rights favourable to some men, and conflicting interpretations of religious books.
  • Religious persecutions can take place that can result in conflicts, dissent, or even a civil war.
