Matter in all its three states is particulate in nature. This means that matter is made up of tiny particles.

The characteristics of the particulate nature of matter are:

  1. These particles have some spaces between them. In these spaces between particles, no matter exists. These inter-molecular spaces are different in solids, liquids and gases.
  2. The particles of matter keep moving continuously. This means that particles are in a state of motion all the time.
  3. These particles have inter-molecular attraction between them. This means that inter-molecular force of attraction exists between the particles of matter that keeps the particles of the matter together and binds them together.
