it was founded in 1569 by the Mughal emperor Akbar,and it served as the capital of Mughal empire from 1571 to 1585.

Akbar,transferred his residence and court from Agra to Sikri to honor the famous  Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chisti,who resided there.
