The forebrain is the most evolved part of the brain. It consists of the cerebrum, thalamus, and hypothalamus (part of the limbic system). The thalamus is a relay centre, like a telephone switchboard. All sensory signals from the sense organs are relayed via the thalamus to the appropriate parts of our brain. The cerebrum is responsible for all intelligent functions such as perception, decision making, planning. The midbrain consists of the tectum, tegmentum and reticular formation. The midbrain coordinates sensory information with simple movements, as in eye-hand coordination. The reticular formation controls the wake-sleep cycle. The hindbrain is mainly to do with the basic life processes of the body, and controls many automatic, physiological processes. It consists of the cerebellum, pons and medulla. The medulla controls heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. The cerebellum coordinates balance and fine muscle movements. The pons coordinates the hindbrain with the midbrain and forebrain. It is also involved in facial expressions.
