Hey there!

PROPERTIES OF COVALENT COMPOUNDS :-

★ A Covalent bond has directional nature. This gives definite shape to a covalent molecule. For example, the methane molecule, has regular tetrahedral shape, and the ammonia molecule, has pyramidal shape, with definite bond angles.

★ A covalent bond is formed between two atoms by sharing of an electron pair.

★ When a covalent bond is formed between atoms of different elements with different electronegativity values , the bond tends to have certain amount of polar or ionic characteristic.

For example,
The Covalent HCl molecule seems to have partial ionic character due to the difference in electronegativity between the hydrogen and chlorine atoms.

★ This bond is usually formed between two non-metal atoms.

Covalent compounds exist as molecules (not as ions),
They generally have low melting and boiling point,
They exist as liquids or gases at room temp except for urea, sugar etc,
They are generally insoluble in polar solvents (like water) but are soluble in organic solvents,
They are poor conductors of electricity in fused or dissolved state.
