Impressions of the body parts of the organism and preserved traces of the living organisms are called fossils.
the presence of fossilized remains of the organism is the evidence of existence of organism millions of years ago which has now become extinct.
Fossil also helps in determining the connecting link between various groups and their origin from their primitive ones.
it also helps us to determine the age when the extinct species have been on earth.
for example-- Archaeopteryx possess features of reptiles as well as Birds. this suggests that birds have evolved from reptiles.
