List two main causes of the pollution of water of the river Ganga. State how pollution and contamination of river water prove harmful for the health of the people of neighbouring areas.

River Ganga flows for over 2500km from Gangotri in the Himalayas to Ganga Sagar in Bay of Bengal is being turned into a dirty water drain for the following reasons:

1. Untreated Sewage and industrial wastes emanating from more than hundred towns and cities which lie along its way.
2. Human activities like bathing ,washing of clothes, immersion of ashes of dead and dumping of un burnt corpses in its water.

Harmful Effects of water Pollution:

1. Pathogens are the biological pollutants of water . They include viruses, bacteria , fungi, protozoan, nematodes etc. They cause diseases like typhoid,Chlorea, Dysentery, Jaundice and Hepatitis.
2. Disturbance in ecological imbalance.
3.Biomagnification of chemical : Due to biomagnification of mercury in the fishes  through a food chain results in Minamata disease in fish eating human population.
4. Destruction of useful Microorganism
5. Due to absence of dissolved oxygen, all the aquatic life in the water body dies.

i. Dumping of untreated sewage and industrial wastes into it.

ii. Waste waters from the industries.

Effects of pollution and contamination of river water:

(a) The contamination of river water leads to the growth of disease-causing

microorganisms.

(b) The river water also becomes toxic because of the discharge of various chemical

effluents by the industries which in turn makes the soil acidic and affects the productivity of crops.
