Question-
List two possible ways in which a concave mirror can produce a magnified image of an object placed in front of it. State the difference, if any, between these two images.
Answer-
The two possible ways in which a concave mirror can produce a magnified image of an object placed in front of it are as follows-
- When the object is placed at focus F, the image is formed at infinity. The image will be enlarged. The image will also be real and inverted.
- When the object is placed at focus F and pole P, the image is formed behind the mirror. The image will be enlarged. The image will also be virtual and erect.
The difference between the two is that one of the images is real and inverted while the other image is virtual and erect. For one, the image distance is negative (-) whereas, for the other image, the image distance is positive (+).
NOTE: When the image distance is negative (-), it means that the image is obtained on the left side of the mirror. When the image distance is positive (+), it means that the image is obtained on the right side of the mirror.
