Hi,
Answer: Catenation and tetravalency.
1. Catenation: it is the self-linking of carbon atom through covalent bonds to form a chain. It can be straight chain or branched chain or cyclic chain.
2. Tetravalency: it is the ability of carbon atom to form four covalent bonds which can be a single bonded carbon or double bonded carbon or triple bonded carbon.
Hope it helped

The two properties that give rise to carbon to form a large number of compounds are: 1) Catenation: It is the ability to form bonds with other carbon atoms. 2) Tetravalency: Due to 4 valency of carbon, it is capable of bonding with four other atoms.
