The two steps taken by the Governor-General Lord Canning to suppress the Revolt 1857 or First War of Independence are as :

1.  He took immediate steps to suppress the revolt. He collected and called the army from Madras, Bombay, Burma, Srilanka and China to Calcutta or India.

2.  He directed the sikh army who were loyal to company, to proceed Delhi immediately. So in this way Company succeeded in quelling the first war of independence and regained the lost territories very soon.
