Only five of the eight tiger sub-species exist today, and, according to a survey conducted in 2011, the Bengal tiger is the highest surviving sub-species. In the beginning of the twentieth century, about 40,000 Bengal tigers existed. Approaching the twenty-first century, there was a drastic decline in the population, and only 3,500 remained.

The main reason for this dramatic change is habitat loss caused by human activity. Humans destroy the Bengal tiger's habitat through the timber and mining industries along with land use for agriculture. Forest destruction has eliminated possible corridors for the Bengal tiger and has isolated the sub-species into broken habitats. Such destruction also kills species Bengal tigers prey on. Additionally, Bengal tigers are hunted and poached for illegal trade and for rituals practiced in India. Their body parts, particularly their skins, are believed by some to hold supernatural power, making them all the more valuable on the black market. These threats have caused the Bengal tiger to be considered endangered
