A saddle joint is a synovial joint where one of the bones framing the joint is molded like a saddle with the other bone laying on it like a rider on a steed.

Saddle joints give strength to the bones while giving more flexibility than a pivot or skimming joint.

The bone sitting on the saddle can move in an oval shape in respect to the next bone, like a condyloid joint.

The best example of a saddle joint in the body is the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb that is shaped between the trapezium bone and the principal metacarpal.
