Concept: Literary devices used by the poet in the poem "The toy".
Answer: Metaphor, Synecdoche, Anaphora, Polysyndeton, Personification, Insinuation, Irony, Enjambment.
Explanation:
Metaphor- The first stanza hints at the toys of the boy. And it refers to the earthly joys human beings are attracted to as well. Besides, this device is also used in the lines-I struck him, and dismiss’d with hard words and unkiss’d. Here, the writter compared hard words to an object that is used to beat someone.
Synecdoche-“thoughtful eyes”. Here, the writter refers to the boy as being thoughtful and wise.
Anaphora- This device is used in the lines-
A box of counters and a red-vein’d stone, a piece of glass abraded by the beach.
Polysyndeton- This is identified in lines “And moved and spoke in quiet grown-up wise”. Here and is repeated for the sake of emphasis.
Insinuation- Ah, when at last we lie with tranced breath, the poet insinuates about death.
Irony- The last line has irony. The speaker could not forgive his child’s mistake but he was thinking the opposite of what he had done.
Enjambment- The poet used this device in the entire poem to connect the lines.
