I know that this questions actually requires writing the whole story named "How Blue is my Sapphire", but because it's for a competition, I'd rather you used some examples of points I will provide you with :)

What is sapphire?
Sapphire is a type of a gemstone. which is particularly known for it's vibrant blue colour. However, what is interesting, sapphires can also be of different colours, like green or orange. Those types or sapphires are called by their respective colours, for example green sapphire.
What does sapphire symbolize?
Truth be told, it actually had countless meanings over the course of ages. In the medieval times it symbolized faith and celestial hope. Many believed that it had protective powers and therefore was a talisman for protection, good fortune, power and also strength.
Nowadays, sapphires are seen as gemstones of wisdom and mental agility. People also believe that it's so pristine that with it one can see behind the appearances and into the inner truth of things.
Ok, so what can I write about then?
Well, I believe that knowing what it symbolizes is the first step to choosing how you would like to use the sapphire in your story. Obviously, it shouldn't be a mere stone and it should have a figurative meaning. However, I can see no reason for not using it the title as a symbol of person's inner strength or wisdom, for example.
Question asked in the title suggests that you should include an element of honing the skill/value that is depicted by the aforementioned gem. You might want to show a comparison with another person for example.
