Living cells placed in an isotonic solution tend to retain their shape and size. This is based on the principle of Osmosis.

  • Osmosis is the concept that involves the moment of solutions inside and outside of the cell. If the cell is placed in an isotonic solution the net change will be zero.
  • When living cells are placed in an isotonic solution, they retain their shape and size as such because no osmotic movement of water molecules takes place. If a plant cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, the cell gets plasmolysed due to exosmosis. On the other hand, if a plasmolysed cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, endosmosis occurs and the cell gets deplasmolysed.
