"The Living and the Dead"- Character sketch of Kadambini

The great Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore was not only a great poet but also an excellent story writer.

Most of his stories deal with the subtlety of human relations. The writer explores each and every aspect of human relations- be they the husband-wife relationship or the sister-in-law and brother, or a little child and a father or an orphan girl and a young man.

Through all the stories Tagore expresses the pain and grief each relationship holds.

The story "The Living and the Dead" explores the he mother-son like relationship of  a widow with the son of her brother-in-law.

The widow Kadambini is a young widow who is very close to her nephew. She is a noble lady but much dejected by society for her widowhood. She suddenly dies one day and is taken for cremation.

Ironically she is not dead and as she wakes up she finds all are frightened at her sight taking her for an apparition.

Kadambini is a patient and thoughtful woman. She knows her return to her family will add to their pains and escalate their hatred towards her.

She tries once only to be embraced by her little nephew but down right shunned by the other members of her family.

The goodness of her character makes her jump into the well to prove that she is finally dead.

The last line of the story sums her entire character,' Kadambini died and proved that she has finally died'.
