Lizzie is cleaning her room and puts her paper clips into a bag. All of her paper clips are identical in size and shape, they just have different colors. She put three black clips, five gold clips, two purple clips and six red clips into the bag. Later, she found some white paper clips and added them to the bag. She told her mom that if she now draws a paper clip at random from the bag, the probability of it being black or gold is 27. How many white paper clips did Lizzie add to the bag? I saw the answwer but am looking to see how the probability of 1/27 was calculated?

Answer:

Total number of paper clips = 3black+ 5gold+2purple+6red= 16 clips

let she added number of white clips be x

now total number of clips are 16+x

Now,propabilty of drawing either a black or giold clip is

1/27

according to question

1/27= 3/(16+x) + 5/(16+x)

1/27= (3+5)/(16+x)

16+x=8×27

16+x= 216

x= 216-16=200

Number of white clips added are 200
