Explanation:

Distance means the actual path covered by a body.

Displacement means the shortest path covered by a body.

Four examples where distance and displacement are equal:-

1. When a body is moving on a straight path:-

  • The longest distance is that path and the shortest path also because there is no alternative path to go. So, in this case, distance = displacement.

2. The moving of pendulum:-

  • It goes to and fro and it covers the distance. But it has no alternative or shortest path other then the distance. So, in this case , distance = displacement.

3. The moving of the swing:-

  • It also goes to and fro and it covers the distance. But here is displacement also because there is no alternative or other shortest path then the distance. So, in this case, distance = displacement.

4. The moving of sea- saw:-

  • It is also the case where the distance = displacement. In this case, it goes to and fro and covers the distance. But it is displacement also because in this case, there is no alternative or other shortest path then the distance. So, in this case also, the distance = displacement.

Four examples where distance and displacement are not equal:-

1. Going school:-

  • Take the example of a student say Raju. He has to go to the school. There are two paths. One path is short but it contains river. So, he can't go from that path. So, he chooses the another path, which is the longest one. So, he will cover the distance and not the displacement.

2. When we move around circular path:-

  • When we will move around the circular path, the distance covered will not be zero but the displacement will be zero. It is so because, our final point will be equal to the initial point which makes a displacement zero and also unequal to the distance covered....

3. The movement of earth around Sun:-

  • Here, when the earth starts rotating around the sun, it covers the distance and when it cover its rotation that is after 24 hours, it come back to its original position. So, here, the initial point and the final point are equal which makes the displacement zero and also an equal to the distance....

4. The movement of moon around the earth:-

  • When the Moon rotates around Earth, it covers the distance and hence when it comes back to its position the initial point will be equal to the final point which makes the displacement zero and an equal to the distance....

EXTRA INFORMATION:-

  • Distance is a scalar quantity that is it only needs magnitude but not distance.
  • Distance always positive it can't be negative or zero.
  • Distance = Speed × Time.

  • Displacement is a vector quantity that is it needs both magnitude and direction.
  • It can we both positive negative and zero as well.
  • Displacement = Velocity × Time.

More to know:-

  • speed is a scalar quantity.
  • velocity is a vector quantity
