As we know atoms possess electrons and may form bond by sharing them or exchange of them with other atoms or elements but when all of there electrons donot get pared and are left with the atom itself are known as lone pairs.
Eg in H2O
H - O -H
Oxygen has 6 el in its valence shell but can pair only 2 so other 2 pairs of electrons are lone pairs
