to represent an irrational number e.g. √3 on number line, we will follow following steps.

1. we will take 3 units (because we are proceeding with √3) towards left side of the number line from zero ( say -3)

2. we will take one step towards right side from zero (say +1)

3. bisect the distance from -3 to +1. we will get a point (say -1).

4. using compass, make a semicircle with bisecting point (say -1) as centre and length of bisecting point from either point as radius (in this case radius is 2 unit).

5. draw a perpendicular line from zero which meets the semicircle at some point.

6. with compass needle at zero and pencil at meeting point mentioned at (5) above, rotate the compass to find a point on number line which is of same distance as that of point mentioned at (5) from zero.

7. this is your point √3 on number line.
