India's climate is mostly monsoon and the factors which determine the climate are differences in the heating and cooling of the land. Water creates low pressure on the lands of India and the sea area has comparatively higher pressure.
The example of higher pressure area is the east of Madagascar which is around 20° south in the Indian Ocean and the intensity there affects the monsoon in India.
In summers there is a shift in the position of Tropical Convergence Zone which is over Ganga plain which is position 5° north this leads to monsoon trough.

The temperature decreases as the altitude increases. So the hills and mountains in India will have a lower temperature. while the plains have the higher temperature. So yes the location and relief do affect the climate of India.
