Internal Traits

Ground Tissue: The nonvascular internal tissues are collectively known as ground tissue. Think of them as being the "background" tissues. The most common ground tissue is Parenchyma. Photosynthetic Parenchyma is called (Chlorenchyma). Chlorenchyma is located just beneath the Dorsal Epidermis. Is this location important? There are Large Air Spaces in the Chlorenchyma. This is like the Spongy Layer in Angiosperm leaves. The term Aerenchyma is used to describe parenchyma with large air spaces. What function may be associated with these air spaces? Colorless Storage Parenchyma is prominent on the ventral side of the thallus. The thallus has a thick Midrib which contains a larger measure of storage parenchyma compared to the "wings" of the thallus.
