The northern plains refer to those places that are located in the southern side of the great Himalayan mountains. It mainly occupies the three distinct broad basins, namely the Brahmaputra basin, the Ganga basin, and the Sutlej basin. These three basins togetherly comprise the states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Delhi, Jharkhand and some parts of West Bengal.
These plain areas are oriented parallel to the Himalaya and are commonly known as the Indo-Gangetic Plains.
These Plains are comprised of soil that is highly rich in the amount of silt and clay composition. These sediments are deposited yearly when the river originating from the higher Himalayas flows downward through the rivers in these northern plain areas. The soil is highly productive, supporting a large number and variety of crops and helps in the proper growth of them.
