Maharashtra was the first state to introduce the institution of Lokayukta through The Lokayukta and Upa-Lokayuktas Act in 1971. This was followed by similar acts being enacted by states of orissa, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka,Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Delhi. It is an anti-corruption ombudsman organization in the Indian states. Many acts of the LokAyukta have resulted in criminal or other consequences for those charged.
Once appointed, Lokayukta can not be dismissed nor transferred by the government, and can only be removed by passing an impeachment motion by the state assembly.
There are no Lokayuktas in Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry-Waiting for President approval, Sikkim, Telangana and Tripura . The latest Lokayukta was established in Tamil Nadu On July 09, 2018, the Arunachal Pradesh assembly passed a Lokayukta bill.
The Tamil nadu government on 09 July 2018 introduced the Lokayukta bill 2018 in the assembly, just a day before the July 10 deadline to submit a compliance report to the Supreme court on establishing an anti-graft ombudsman.
