HEY MATE
people were afraid of travelling long distances in one direction because
they thought they might reach the end of the world where they might fall straight into hell
or fall of something like a cliff
or they may never return
or they may be attacked or held captive by some sort of creature
or probably it was because of religious rules where crossing the seas is like a taboo
or probably they were too scared to explore due to fear of their lives
and they didn't have good technology(lifeboats, ships, compass, maps)
and rumors about the sea scared them
HOPE IT HELPS!
