What is a mixture?

A mixture is a substance made by combining two or more different materials in such a way that no chemical reaction occurs.

Five examples of mixtures.

examples:Dirt and water

Ink: A mixture of coloured dyes.

Air: a mixture of various gases

Alloys are usually homogeneous mixtures of metals

Water and salt (Sea water)

Why do we call sea water a mixture?

The sea-water contains a mixture of salt and some other bigger size of impurities and a mixture of several gases in seawater. Due to other bigger size of impurities, seawater is classified as a heterogeneous mixture while due to a mixture of several gases and salt in seawater it is classified as homogeneous mixture.

Describe how common salt is obtained from sea-water.

One of them is common salt, when sea water is allowed to stand in shallow pits, water gets evaporated by sunlight and slowly turns into water vapor. In a few days, the water evaporates completely leaving behind the solid salts. Common salt is then obtained from this mixture of salts by further purification.
