The central location of India at the head of the Indian Ocean is considered of great significance because of the following reasons:

1. The trans Indian Ocean routes which connect the countries of Europe in the West and the countries of East Asia provide a strategic central location toIndia.

2. The Deccan Peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean, help India establish a close contact with West Asia, Africa and Europe from the western coast and with Southeast and East Asia from theeastern coast.

3. India has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean which become favourable trading ports and commerce hubs for other countries.

4. The coastal regions of India are famous for agriculture, trade & industrial centres, tourist centres, fishing and salt making. They provide important hinterlands for the ports

India is favorably situated on the worlds trade highway to the east and west

* The oceanic routes pass through the Indian ocean connecting it with Europe, North and South America through Suez canal and the cape of good hope.

* The peninsular part protrudes into the Indian ocean helping India to establish close contact with Africa and west Asia.

* The ideas of Upanishads and the Ramayana, the stories of Panchtantra, The Indian numerals and the decimal system could reach far and wide in the medieval times.

* Buddhism traveled from India to China, Tibet and Japan. The influence of Greek sculpture and architectural style can be seen in different parts or many parts of the country. India spices, cotton, muslin etc were much in demand the world over.
