The poem 'Invictus' by William Ernest Henley is a powerful poem. The poet says that even in the darkest of Nights he thanks god for his unconquerable soul. Even in the worst circumstances, he has not given up or complained. Even what situations are getting difficult and he is hurt, he holds his head high and unbowed.

Even approaching death does not frighten him though he knows that he may face punishments and may have to pay the price for all the wrong he may have done. The poet stresses that he alone is responsible for his actions, and though he has been battered by fate, he has not be conquered.

The rhyme scheme throughout the poem is abab which gives the poem it's grim effect. Figures of speech like inversion, repetition are frequently used throughout the poem but the line that catches my attention is an example of personification. In the fell clutch of circumstance, circumstance is personified. It is said to be clutching wickedly.
