Answer \:

Nitrogen Cycle :

The cyclic process of circulation of nitrogen continuously through living and non- living components is called the nitrogen Cycle.

Nitrogen cycle has the following steps :

  • Nitrogen fixation : Plants and animals cannot directly take in atmospheric nitrogen. It is first converted into nitrates. It is the main source of nitrogen for green plants. Bacteria like Rhizobium (present in the roots of leguminous plants) convert free atmospheric nitrogen into soluble nitrates.
  • Nitrate assimilation : Plants absorb nitrates from the soil through root. Nitrates convert into plant proteins. The animals eat green plants and these plant proteins are utilised by the animals.
  • Ammonification : Animals excrete waste materials like urea or uric acid. The proteins present in them are converted into ammonium compounds by the putrefying bacteria.
  • Nitrification : Ammonium salt in the soil is converted first into nitrites. The nitrites are then converted into nitrates.
  • Denitrification : Part of the nitrates in the soil are converted by Pseudomonas bacteria into nitrogen gas that escapes into the atmosphere.
