The largest inflorescence that typically occurs amongst plants belongs to the puya Puya raimondii, a rare species of giant bromeliad living high in the Bolivian mountains. The vertical stalk or panicle produced when the puya blooms stands up to 10.7 m (35 ft) high, with a diameter of up to 2.4 m (8 ft), and bears approximately 8,000 small white flowers. This enormous inflorescence is so strong that it can support a man if he climbs up it.
