The Godavari is the longest Peninsular river. It originates from the Western Ghats in the Nashik district of Maharashtra. It is about 1500 km long.

The drainage basin of the Godavari river is the largest among the Peninsular rivers. It is also known as "Dakshin Ganga" because of it's length and the area it covers.

Some of it's important tributaries are the Purna, Wardha, Pranhita, Manjra, Wainganga and Penganga.
